Appropriate Assessment under the habitat regulations

If planning authorities conclude that a proposed development is likely to significantly affect an International site of importance, it then has an obligation to carry out an appropriate assessment of its implications in view of the site's conservation objectives (i.e. the reasons for which the site was classified), so as to ascertain whether or not it will adversely affect the integrity of the site.

The scope and content of what constitutes an appropriate assessment will depend on the location, size and significance of the proposed project. As the variation of these factors can be vast, RSK Carter Ecological can advise on a case-by-case basis.

RSK Carter Ecological can offer a number of services to efficiently and effectively aid the appropriate assessment:

We can provide detailed desktop assessments, drawing together existing data through a range of media tools.

We also carry out consultations with appropriate statutory bodies, such as Scottish Natural Heritage, Natural England and Countryside Council for Wales. Good working relationships have been forged with these nature conservation organizations, along with other consultees.

For appropriate circumstances, detailed baseline surveys can be arranged and carried out efficiently with our strong team of ecological specialists.

Creation of mitigation schemes concentrating on appropriate, effective and efficient measures. Whilst we always observe legal and best practice guidelines, we aim to deliver our clients innovative ecological solutions.

Long term monitoring of all protected species and habitat types can be carried out to ensure that mitigation measures have been successful or that the predicted level of impact was correct.
