It is a statutory requirement to undertake an EIA for certain specified developments, for example motorways, power stations and industrial development. Other, smaller projects, such as farming, mineral extraction and infrastructure developments may also require EIA depending on their size, location and potential to cause significant environmental impacts.
An EIA provides benefits to the client, as information gathered can inform the early phases of decision making and design and can facilitate project development from conception to construction. This in turn can lead to significant cost savings and avoid substantial delays.
At RSK Carter Ecological, we have a strong track-record in EIA, and offer in-depth experience of ecological input to the whole process, from initial scoping to Environmental Statement, across a huge range of industries from petrochemical landfalls and gas pipelines through rail and light rapid transit projects to large-scale business parks and urban regeneration schemes. Several staff teach at University, have authorized parts of EIA guidance issued by government agencies, and have acted as expert witness at public enquiry.
The key steps in our approach to EIA are:
Close liaison with the client to ascertain needs and ensure a thorough understanding of the project
Undertaking a scoping study and production of a scoping report to identify key environmental issues at the outset and to provide a forum for discussing assessment methodologies and proposed program of surveys.
Use our good working relationships with statutory and non-statutory consultees and stakeholders including Natural England and the Environment Agency to ensure agreement with working methods and integration of mitigation measures.
Effective project management
Working closely with wider team members including landscape architects, engineers, land agents and developers to ensure efficient working and effective communications.
Commissioning and undertaking specialist surveys, particularly in the field of ecology
Assessment of environmental impacts
Advise on appropriate mitigation measures to reduce or avoid environmental impacts and enhance the project design.
Development of mitigation measures
Preparation and publication of an Environmental Statement and non-technical summary
